Will solar panels work on my roof?

Most homeowners have some part of their roof which can have solar panels installed. Here are the factors that matter most.

In our experience, most homeowners have some part of their roof which can have solar panels installed. Here are the key factors we'll use to decide whether you have a good roof for solar:

  • Orientation: A south-facing roof is ideal for maximizing sunlight and energy production. East- or west-facing roofs still work but produce about 75% of the energy of a south-facing roof.
  • Shading: Your roof should be mostly free of shade during the day. Trees, chimneys, and vents can block sunlight, so your installer will check for shading.
  • Surface: Solar panels work best on large, open areas. Obstacles like dormers, chimneys, and skylights can limit space for panels.
  • Age: If your roof is over 15 years old, consider replacing it before installing solar. Panels are designed to last at least 25 years, so the roof should last just as long.
Interested in getting solar? New state rebates and incentives offer homeowners low-cost or even no-cost solar and battery systems. In California, for example, eligible homeowners can receive a free solar and battery system through the SGIP program
