Will I lose my NEM status if I expand my existing solar system?

For homeowners who are under NEM 1.0 or NEM 2.0, you can maintain your current NEM status (and keep your original compensation rates) depending on certain factors.

For homeowners who are under NEM 1.0 or NEM 2.0, you can maintain your current NEM status (and keep your original compensation rates) if:

  • The increase in your system capacity is less than 10% or less than 1 kW, whichever is greater
  • The change does not trigger a new interconnection application

If your system expansion exceeds that threshold, your utility may consider it a new system, which could:

  • Require a new interconnection application
  • Transition you to NEM 3.0, with significantly lower export compensation
