Why is California funding SGIP?
The biggest reason is that California is facing an energy crisis. People need more and more electricity to cool their homes, run appliances, and power their cars. Demand is outpacing supply, and the costs of making necessary infrastructure upgrades (and funding new generation) are staggering.
To meet demand and secure safe, reliable power for Californians, it's cheaper and faster for the state to invest in new residential solar and battery systems. Batteries keep costs down, use renewable energy, and respond quickly to spikes in demand at the local level. Together they act as a virtual power plant (or VPP), storing and distributing energy as needed.
In fact, if you are approved for a system through SGIP, the only requirement is for your battery to help the grid when it's stressed, which is also known as participating in demand response.
The rest of the time, your solar panels power your home during the day and your battery then stores that extra energy to use later, when rates are most expensive.
